8. BURMESE PYTHON
27 years ago, southern Florida was ravaged by Hurricane Andrew. The category 5 hurricane was the most destructive tropical storm to hit the state until Irma passed through during late 2017, and the damage was extensive. One unexpected consequence of Hurricane Andrew was the release of captive Burmese pythons into the regional ecosystem.

7. GREEN IGUANA
The green iguana is Florida’s most invasive species, due largely to the uninformed decision of many people to get one as a pet without realizing how much care they require. Iguanas need lots of food, become hostile during mating season, and can grow up to five feet long (1.5 m).

6. NILE MONITOR
Thanks yet again to pet owners not knowing how to handle their unwanted reptiles, Africa’s largest lizard now also bears the distinction of being Florida’s largest lizard. The Nile monitor was first spotted in Cape Coral in 1990, after most likely being abandoned by an aspiring exotic pet owner who was ill-prepared for the responsibilities associated with caring for the large and intelligent species.

5. AFRICAN CLAWED FROG
In 2016, researchers from the University of Florida discovered a local population of the African clawed frog. While the frog is known to breed in various parts of the world, their presence in Florida was previously unknown. African clawed frogs have been commonly used since the 1930’s as specimens for biological research, and were also popular for determining if a woman was pregnant until the 1970’s, when modern pregnancy tests came long.

4. GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAIL
After these three animals on today’s list, it should come as no surprise to you that Florida has also been invaded by the world’s largest terrestrial mollusk, or the giant African land snail, which grows to eight inches (20 cm) long and reaches a diameter of up to four inches (10 cm).

3. FERAL HOGS
Wild hogs are a problem throughout all of Florida’s 67 counties and may have first arrived in the state as early as 1539, courtesy of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto for hunting and food. They can grow between five and six feet long and can weigh upwards of 150 pounds.

2. LIONFISH
Lionfish are beautiful to look at, but they don’t belong in Florida’s waters. These highly-venomous fish are native to Indonesia and are equipped with very poisonous spines. They are impressively adaptable and can survive in a variety of marine environments. Lionfish prey on nearly everything and can consume up to 30 times their stomach volume.

1. RHESUS MACAQUE
For the past 80 years, Florida’s Silver Spring State Park has been home to a population of rhesus macaques, a monkey that is native to south and southeast Asia. National Geographic reports that their population is estimated to double in size and carry a deadly herpes virus.

9. Cuttlefish
Deception is the cuttlefish’s claim to fame when it comes to their survival and sustenance. One of the trademark defensive and hunting strategies of the species is its ability to rapidly change its color, texture, and pattern. This is made possible by special skin cells called chromatophores.

8. Great White Shark
The great white shark is considered one of the most powerful, and scariest apex predators in the world. This shark is most notable for its size, females can reach around 20 feet in length (6.1 m) and they can live to 70 years or more. They have six highly refined senses of smell, are shaped like a torpedo and we are now learning that they are much more intelligent than we first thought.

7. Asian Giant Hornet
The Asian giant hornet is the embodiment of what it means to be an efficient predator. In just a few hours, 30 members of this invasive species can kill a colony of 30,000 honeybees simply by sitting outside their nest and capturing workers as they go in and out. To get the job done, the Asian giant hornet decapitates its victims using its mandibles.

6. Blue Whale
This one might surprise you. Of course blue whales aren’t considered scary, unless you are krill of course! We don’t usually think of whales as being efficient predators but surprisingly, the blue whale has a very successful hunting rate. They are the largest animals ever known and can reach up to 34 meters long (111 feet).

5. ‘Deathstalker’ Scorpion
The four-inch-long (10 cm) ‘deathstalker’ scorpion, also called the Israeli desert scorpion or the Omdurman scorpion, is considered small compared to many other scorpion species. However, its venom contains high amounts of toxins, making it the deadliest scorpion on earth out of 2,500 known existing species.

4. Black-Footed Cat
At first glance, the adorable black-footed cat seems harmless and perhaps not much different than your furry companion at home. In fact, the species is smaller than the typical housecat, measuring between 14 and 20 inches long (36-52 cm) and around eight inches (20 cm) tall. On average, this tiny feline weighs between two and six pounds (1-3 kg).

3. Orcas
Also known as the killer whale, orcas are not actually whales. They are the largest member of the dolphin family and they have become the top apex predator of the sea. Even surpassing great white sharks. They are social animals, often living in pods of 40 or more and they have adapted their behaviour and hunting techniques depending on the type of prey they are after.

When it comes to Africa’s most vicious predators, the first thing that comes to mind for many, if not most people, are big cats such as lions, tigers, and cheetahs. However, the continent’s most efficient predator is the African wild dog, also known as the “painted wolf.” In fact, this species is one of the most impressive carnivores in the world.

Surprised?? Researchers at Harvard University determined in 2012 that dragonflies catch up to 95 percent of their prey on average, making them the deadliest predators on Earth. When it comes to hunting, they’re twice as successful as great white sharks and four times better than lions.
