8. Mermaids
Mermaids have been both romanticised and villanised in fiction. We have our lovable Little Mermaid, Ariel, who just wants to be connected with the human world. But then again, we also have the evil but beautiful sirens who would sooner lead humans to their while making them fall in love with their music.

7. The Beast of Dartmoor
In the southwest of England, a cluster of moors called Dartmoor is home to a lot of creepy stories and sightings. A lot of people claim that certain areas of Dartmoor are haunted which can easily be shrugged off. However, many people have not only seen this next creature, but they’ve taken pictures of it. 6. Zombies
Many people actually believe that zombies are real.14% of Americans believe there is a small chance of a zombie apocalypse coming. All the zombie shows and movies aren’t helping so maybe these unreal creatures don’t need that much of an explanation...

5. Loch Ness Monster
Supposedly, the Loch Ness Monster inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Last year, 2017, was a great year for Nessie sightings!! Many people have snapped pictures of what they believed to be the fabled sea serpent but they’ve always been on pixelated phones or the image moved too quickly to be able to clarify for certain whether or not it is the creature.

4. Dracula
While I could delve into the vast world of vampires throughout history, I’ll just focus on the most famous vampire that there is - Count Dracula. While Bram Stoker’s novel is entirely fictional, he was inspired by someone who is probably the closest historical evidence that we have of a real vampire.

3. Unicorns
Now you have unicorn everything!! You can’t step into a clothing store anywhere without seeing something with a unicorn on it. Unicorn makeup, glitter, tears...Starbucks even created a unicorn inspired frappuccino. But where did the idea of unicorns come from? Do people still think they can see them?

2. Bigfoot
This list would be incomplete without Big Foot. The sasquatch creature has been an unexplained phenomena for many years. Many people have claimed to have seen him themselves, there’s multiple pictures and videos but none of them are definitive evidence. Like any film taken on an old camera phone, they’re not entirely clear and could be anything - similarly to the Beast of Dartmoor.

1. Mummies
The idea of mummies has been scaring children - and some adults - for years. Especially if you’ve seen Scooby Doo, you know that the zombie-like Egyptians can be quite terrifying. Of course, mummification was very real, which is perhaps what makes them so creepy.

9. Dwarves
The dwarves were master smiths and craftspeople who lived underground in a place called Svartalfheim. Their home was believed to be a complex of labyrinths containing forges and mines.

8. Elves
Rumored to be more beautiful than the sun, the elves were tall, slim demi-gods with pale features that inhabited the realm of Alfheim, ruled by the god Freyr. Also called Ljósálfar, for the most part, elves stayed out of human affairs. The limited relationship between elves and humans was an ambivalent one.

7. Valkyries
Valkyries were beautiful maidens who served the god Odin. The name “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain”, and while that was true, they were also able to decide who died in battle and use malicious magic to ensure that things played out according to their plan.

6. Jormungand
Also known as the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand was a massive, dragon-like sea serpent who lived in the ocean surrounding Midgard, the visible world. He was so huge, his body wrapped entirely around it.

5. Draugar
Draugar were undead creatures with superhuman strength - they were essentially the zombies of Norse mythology. Their swollen and blackened appearance resembled that of a rotting corpse and they stunk of decay.

4. Fenrir
There are many wolves of Norse mythology, and Fenrir was the most infamous of them all. He was the brother of the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand. Like his sibling, Fenrir grew astonishingly fast, eventually causing the gods to chain him in an attempt to keep him under control.

3. Ratatoskr
Ratatoskr was a squirrel who ran up and down Yggdrasil, the tree of life, delivering messages between enemies. By all accounts, he had the appearance of a typical squirrel.

2. Fossegrim
Fossegrim, also known simply as grim, was a water spirit and an exceptionally talented fiddler who was most often depicted as a semi-clothed male fairy. He mimicked the sounds of the forest, wind, and water with his fiddle and you could sometimes convince him to teach the skill.

1. Mare
The Mare is what nightmares are made of - literally. This malicious monster slipped through cracks in walls and floors and “rode” on people’s chests while they slept, causing them to have awful dreams and, in some cases, sleep paralysis. In some variations of the myth, she specifically targeted men.

10. Mongolian Death Worm
In the vast sands of the Gobi desert lives a creature that according to many is too dangerous to even consider approaching: the Mongolian death worm! Locals refer to it as “olgoi-khorkhoi” which roughly translates to “large intestine worm” which makes sense given its description.

9. Alabama's Huggin' Molly
In the town of Abbeville, Alabama, a local legend about a 7-foot-tall woman keeps residents on their toes.
Dressed in black with a large brimmed hat, Huggin’ Molly is said to be a phantom-like creature who appears to children.

Although you may be familiar with famous grainy photographs of mythological creatures, modern technology can give us a more detailed look at territory that had previously been unexplored.
Engineer Pita Witehira was researching locations for a holiday home when he spotted a strange anomaly on a satellite photo of Google Earth.

7. The Ogopogo
In Canada's British Columbia, hunter Bill Steciuk spotted what he believed to be a legendary Canadian creature in 1978. This mysterious sighting sent him on a journey to uncover the truth about what he might have seen. He had seen three humps and a head moving through the water and over the years continued to conduct hunting expeditions on Okanagan Lake, hoping to catch another glimpse.

In the spring of 1971, people living in Mobile, Alabama and areas nearby were said to have seen a strange-looking creature lurking around. Described as having the upper body of a woman and the lower limbs of a wolf, one of the witnesses described the wolf woman as being "a woman and a wolf, pretty and hairy".

In 1952, a group of children, a mom, and their dog watched a UFO crash behind a hill near the town of Flatwoods. After the group searched the woods, they discovered a supposed crash site.

Over the years, there have been numerous sightings of a strange beast known as the Florida Skunk Ape, or the Swamp Sasquatch. It is a cryptid believed to be related to Big Foot, about 6 to 7 feet tall, very hairy, and extremely smelly.
