9. Dwarves
The dwarves were master smiths and craftspeople who lived underground in a place called Svartalfheim. Their home was believed to be a complex of labyrinths containing forges and mines.

8. Elves
Rumored to be more beautiful than the sun, the elves were tall, slim demi-gods with pale features that inhabited the realm of Alfheim, ruled by the god Freyr. Also called Ljósálfar, for the most part, elves stayed out of human affairs. The limited relationship between elves and humans was an ambivalent one.

7. Valkyries
Valkyries were beautiful maidens who served the god Odin. The name “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain”, and while that was true, they were also able to decide who died in battle and use malicious magic to ensure that things played out according to their plan.

6. Jormungand
Also known as the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand was a massive, dragon-like sea serpent who lived in the ocean surrounding Midgard, the visible world. He was so huge, his body wrapped entirely around it.

5. Draugar
Draugar were undead creatures with superhuman strength - they were essentially the zombies of Norse mythology. Their swollen and blackened appearance resembled that of a rotting corpse and they stunk of decay.

4. Fenrir
There are many wolves of Norse mythology, and Fenrir was the most infamous of them all. He was the brother of the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand. Like his sibling, Fenrir grew astonishingly fast, eventually causing the gods to chain him in an attempt to keep him under control.

3. Ratatoskr
Ratatoskr was a squirrel who ran up and down Yggdrasil, the tree of life, delivering messages between enemies. By all accounts, he had the appearance of a typical squirrel.

2. Fossegrim
Fossegrim, also known simply as grim, was a water spirit and an exceptionally talented fiddler who was most often depicted as a semi-clothed male fairy. He mimicked the sounds of the forest, wind, and water with his fiddle and you could sometimes convince him to teach the skill.

1. Mare
The Mare is what nightmares are made of - literally. This malicious monster slipped through cracks in walls and floors and “rode” on people’s chests while they slept, causing them to have awful dreams and, in some cases, sleep paralysis. In some variations of the myth, she specifically targeted men.

10. T-Rex
In 2005, something that was previously thought to be impossible was found during an archaeological dig in Montana, and it would take 8 years before scientists could explain what had happened. The discovery was a leg fossil of an adolescent T-Rex, but inside it, there was some tissue that was described as being soft, transparent, and flexible.

9. Tail In Amber
With only fossils to go by, it's difficult to know exactly what species looked like a long time ago, but a discovery in 2015 helped us get a much better idea! Within a lump of amber that was on sale at a market in Myanmar, was a perfectly preserved prehistoric tail- complete with feathers.

8. Homotherium
It had long been thought that Homotherium, a type of saber-toothed cat from Europe, had gone extinct about 300,000 years ago, but analysis of a discovery in 2000 forced researchers to rethink everything.

7. Brachylophosaurus
One of the rarest fossils found in recent times was of a Brachylophosaurus canadensis. It was found in a canyon wall in Montana in the year 2000, and it took a demolition crew to fully remove the 18-foot piece of stone from the cliff. Fossils of the 77 million-year-old duck-billed dinosaur are hardly ever found, but this one was even more special because its skin had also fossilized.

6. Hematite Tubes
The earth is believed to be around 4.55 billion years old, but a recent discovery has found that it wasn't too long until the first signs of life began to emerge. Very few places on the planet have any rocks that are older than 3 billion years, but the places where some survive are the ideal hunting ground for ancient life.

5. Four Legged Snake
The evolutionary history of snakes has long been of interest to researchers- specifically whether they emerged from the oceans without limbs or whether this was an adaptation that developed later on. Fossils to prove one way or another were proving to be elusive, but one discovery that was announced in 2015 changed all that.

4. Protoceratops and Velociraptor
One of the most stunning fossils ever to be found was discovered by a team that was looking at white sandstone cliffs in the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. Dated to around 80 million years ago, it's of two dinosaurs, a Velociraptor, and a Protoceratops, which were fighting each other when they were suddenly buried by a sand flow.

3. Baleen Whale
After originally having been found in 1978 and dismissed as unimportant, scientists returned to a fossil 30 years later and realized it was far more significant than was first thought. It had been discovered in a canyon in Palos Verdes in LA and is believed to be about 14 to 16 million years old.

2. Ichthyosaur
During the time of the dinosaurs, the oceans were just as dangerous as the land, and one of the most dominant predators to ever swim the seas was the Ichthyosaur. They evolved from land-based lizards who returned to the water around 250 million years ago, and the discovery in China of a fossil has given much clearer details of how they gave birth.

1. Nodosaur
In 2011, as a heavy machine operator dug up the ground at the Millenium mine in Alberta, he hit something that was noticeably harder than the surrounding rock. Strange colored lumps of rock started coming out and he realized he had found something unusual… something that turned out to be a very rare type of fossil.

10. Mystery Heads
Finding disembodied heads underground in an Ancient Egyptian tomb sounds like something from a horror movie. But don’t worry, they’re not real heads. As for what they were doing there, the jury’s still out. The heads are a bit of a mystery to this day. The first examples were discovered in 1894 and since then, over 30 have been located. They were nicknamed ‘reserve heads’ because… well, they looked like a bunch of spare heads!

9. The Giza Void
It’s amazing how even the oldest landmarks can still surprise you. In 2017 experts were very surprised when examining the legendary Great Pyramid of Giza on the West Bank of the Nile. As you may know, but just in case you don’t this ancient wonder of the world was built for Pharaoh Khufu and is the largest one of 3.

8. Kites
Mysterious lines in the Egyptian deserts have been seen from the air for around a century. Everyone was wondering what they were! It turns out, they’re made up of little stone walls, not very high at all, in a kite-style formation. Some of them are as long as 40 miles. Even more mysterious was the fact that they lead toward a pit in the sand.

7. King Tut’s Mummy
One of the great mysteries of Ancient Egypt is the circumstances surrounding the death of Tutankhamun. Howard Carter found his legendary tomb in 1922 and made him a historical superstar. What’s maybe not as well known is that King Tut died very young, while in his teens.

6. Black Boxes
If you thought the Great Pyramid of Giza sounded mysterious, wait till you hear about what was found in Memphis! In a cave network 12 miles away from Giza, 24 big black boxes were found. They weigh 100 tons each and are so unusual that some believe them to be alien artefacts!

5. Lost Labyrinth
In the vicinity of the Middle Egyptian city of Faiyum, 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Cairo, there is an area known as Faiyum Oasis. Supposedly, there lies what’s left of one of the most immense and talked-about structures of Ancient Egypt… the mysterious Lost Labyrinth.

4. That’s a Wrap
Though people don’t know a lot about Ancient Egypt, there are certain things everybody knows about, hopefully. Egypt is famous for its pyramids and also the mummies. Examples have been found of mummies that don’t look the way you’d expect. Take this one in the Louvre museum in Paris. It’s an exhibit in the long-established Department of Egyptian Antiquities, which is made up of an impressive 30 rooms showcasing all manner of finds.

3. The Dendera Light
While we believe the light bulb is a relatively modern invention, some commentators would dispute this. In fact they’d go so far as to say the Ancient Egyptians had access to a power source that gave them things like electric light way before it was officially invented!

10. Bakoni, South Africa
In South Africa, on the hills around Machadodorp to the southeast of the country, are the remains of a series of structures built by the Bakoni people. The hilly countryside is covered with terraces made of stone walls and large complex of ruins.

9. The African City of Stone, Zimbabwe
The Country of Zimbabwe actually took its name, in 1980, from this archaeological site…. The ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. This city of stone was the center of the region between the 10th and 15th centuries and covered an area of around 1779 acres. Now, the structures that remain include a number of stone enclosures, some of which are as tall as 36 feet (11 m).

8. Gedi, Kenya
First found in 1884…. The Gedi ruins, in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest in Kilifi, Kenya, are all that remains of an ancient town- one that continues to be a mystery to archaeologists. There are no written records of Gedi, but the structures and artifacts that have been found there show evidence of a once thriving town that was both advanced and affluent before its demise at some point in the 17th century.

7. The Lalibela Churches, Ethiopia
In the center of Ethiopia, about 400 miles from the capital city Addis Ababa, there’s a mountainous region that was once a site of religious significance. Here, 11 monolithic churches were carved into the rock, thought to have been built by King Lalibela in an attempt to build a ‘New Jerusalem’ in the 12th century after Muslim conquests prevented Christians from being able to travel to their holy city.

6. The Stone Circles of Senegambia
The stone circles of Senegambia are a series of megalithic structures that cover an area 62 miles wide along a 200 mile stretch of the river Gambia. It’s not certain when the monuments were built, with estimates ranging between 2300 and 400 years ago. Along with the stonework, pottery, graves, and pieces of metal have also been found… showing signs of a fairly advanced society.

5. A Lost Tswana City, South Africa
The Difaqane civil wars in the 1820’s led to the collapse of the majority of Tswana city-states, that once stood strong along the northern parts of South Africa. Many of them were never even documented before being abandoned, and are only now being re-discovered.

4. The Ledi Jaw, Ethiopia
As the continent where the human species developed, there are still a lot of questions about our ancestral lineage- some that have been answered recently by the discovery of the Ledi Jaw. There’s a big gap in our knowledge about how our own Homo genus evolved.

3. Meroë, Sudan
Egypt is, of course, well known for its pyramids… but it’s not the only country in Africa where they were built. In the desert to the east of Sudan, along the river Nile, there’s a series of almost 200 ancient pyramids, with most of them serving as tombs for the leaders of the Meroitic Kingdom.

2. Laas Geel, Somalia
Laas Geel, which means ‘source of water for camels’, is a series of rock shelters and caves that lie about 34 miles northeast of the capital city of Somaliland, Hargeisa. The site is now dry, but it's near the confluence of two former rivers, which would explain why it was once known as a water source and a place with extensive evidence of human activity.

1. Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania
In northern Tanzania, the Olduvai Gorge is where some of the most important discoveries have been made about our ancient ancestors. Archaeologists and Paleoanthropologists have worked in the area for more than a century, and have found stone tools and bones dating back millions of years. This means that we humans evolved in Africa.

10. Mongolian Death Worm
In the vast sands of the Gobi desert lives a creature that according to many is too dangerous to even consider approaching: the Mongolian death worm! Locals refer to it as “olgoi-khorkhoi” which roughly translates to “large intestine worm” which makes sense given its description.

9. Alabama's Huggin' Molly
In the town of Abbeville, Alabama, a local legend about a 7-foot-tall woman keeps residents on their toes.
Dressed in black with a large brimmed hat, Huggin’ Molly is said to be a phantom-like creature who appears to children.

Although you may be familiar with famous grainy photographs of mythological creatures, modern technology can give us a more detailed look at territory that had previously been unexplored.
Engineer Pita Witehira was researching locations for a holiday home when he spotted a strange anomaly on a satellite photo of Google Earth.

In Canada's British Columbia, hunter Bill Steciuk spotted what he believed to be a legendary Canadian creature in 1978. This mysterious sighting sent him on a journey to uncover the truth about what he might have seen. He had seen three humps and a head moving through the water and over the years continued to conduct hunting expeditions on Okanagan Lake, hoping to catch another glimpse.

6. The Wolf Woman of Mobile
In the spring of 1971, people living in Mobile, Alabama and areas nearby were said to have seen a strange-looking creature lurking around. Described as having the upper body of a woman and the lower limbs of a wolf, one of the witnesses described the wolf woman as being "a woman and a wolf, pretty and hairy".

Yes, another worm! Weird right? In 2012, a strange video appeared on YouTube showing a mysterious shape moving below the ice in a lake in Iceland.
For some the video was proof that a legendary sea serpent or monster, the subject of folktales in the area since the 14th century, was real.

3. The Flatwoods Monster of West Virginia
When tales of an extraterrestrial spread through the Upper Elk River area of West Virginia in the 1950s, locals were pretty alarmed. In 1952, a group of children, a mom, and their dog watched a UFO crash behind a hill near the town of Flatwoods. After the group searched the woods, they discovered a supposed crash site.

2. The Florida Skunk Ape
Over the years, there have been numerous sightings of a strange beast known as the Florida Skunk Ape, or the Swamp Sasquatch. It is a cryptid believed to be related to Big Foot, about 6 to 7 feet tall, very hairy, and extremely smelly.

Stories of the vampire-like creature first emerged in Puerto Rico in the 1990’s. It began when farmers began noticing that their livestock was starting to get attacked and killed at night by a vampire like-creature, that would leave puncture marks and drain their blood.

8. RYOU-UN MARU
In March 2011 in northeastern Japan, the Tohoku tsunami washed the 164-foot fishing boat Ryou-Un Maru away from its mooring in Hokkaido. Japanese officials assumed that the vessel had sunk and canceled its registration. Nobody knew that it was actually floating across the Pacific Ocean.

7. SV KAZ II
In April 2007, a three-man crew set out in a 12-meter catamaran called the SV Kaz II with plans to spend two months sailing around Australia. At the helm was the skipper, Des Batten, joined by brothers Peter and John Tunstead. They were bound for Western Australia, where they all lived.

6. BEL AMICA
In August 2006, a classic schooner named the Bel Amica was discovered by an Italian Coast Guard crew off the coast of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia near Punta Volpe. There was no crew on board. The coast guard boarded the vessel, which was drifting toward rocks and shallow waters, and steered it away.

5. MV JOYITA
On October 3, 1955, the merchant vessel MV Joyita departed Samoa’s Apia harbor in the South Pacific, bound for the Tokelau Islands, some 270 miles (430 km) away. The ship was supposed to leave the day before, but was delayed due to a failed port engine clutch. Eventually, the vessel left Samoa on one engine, carrying 16 crew members and nine passengers, as well as cargo consisting of medical supplies, empty oil drums, timber, and food.

4. SS OURANG MEDAN
In 1948, the ghost ship SS Ourang Medan was allegedly discovered by an American vessel 400 nautical miles southeast of the Marshall Islands. The boat was littered with the crew members’ bodies. It reportedly caught fire and sank shortly after its discoverers boarded.

3. CARROLL A. DEERING
The five-masted cargo schooner Carroll A. Deering was last spotted with its crew on January 28, 1921 while passing the Cape Lookout lightship off the North Carolina coast. The American vessel was on its way back to Norfolk, Virginia after delivering a cargo of coal to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

2. ZEBRINA
In October 1917, the British three-masted sailing barge Zebrina departed Falmouth, Cornwall, England with a cargo of Swansea coal. Commanded by a man named Captain Martin, the ship was bound for Saint-Brieuc, France. Two days later, the Zebrina was found run aground south of Cherbourg, France, on Rozel Point.

1. HMS RESOLUTE
In August 1853, the British Royal Navy ship HMS Resolute was trapped by ice in Viscount Melville Sound, Canada during a search expedition for missing British explorer Sir John Franklin.

8. Hamilton College Time Capsule
In July 2018, students and staff at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York gathered for the public opening of a time capsule that had recently been discovered on accident. The time capsule was buried by the class of 1890 and remained undisturbed until 128 years later, when a road crew found it while doing some construction work on campus.

7. America’s Oldest Capsule
A handful of historians received the opportunity of a lifetime in early 2015, after they opened a time capsule from 240 years ago!! America’s oldest time capsule was rediscovered by workers repairing a water leak in the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

6. Lion’s Head Time Capsule
In September 2014, just a few months before America’s oldest time capsule was found, the Massachusetts State House in Boston was the site of another exciting discovery. A golden lion statue atop the building contained the 113-year-old contents of yet another time capsule.

5. The 1876 Century Safe
In 1876, a Civil War widow and New York magazine publisher named Anna Deihm attempted to gift a large iron safe to Congress. Within it were several pieces of Americana that she had collected during the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876. The event marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and was held in Philadelphia.

4. Martin Luther King Jr. Time Capsule
In 1988, a time capsule containing several possessions of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was lowered into the ground beneath Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC. The capsule was placed in memory of King’s 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech, at the location where the historic oration occurred. In fact, the formerly-named Western Plaza was renamed Freedom Plaza following King’s speech.

3. Juneau Time Capsule
Twenty-five years ago, in August 1994, a nine-by-six foot janitor’s closet at the Hurff Ackerman Saunders Federal Building in Juneau, Alaska was converted into a time capsule, sealed off, and fitted with a plate glass observation window.

2. Crypt Of Civilization
Underneath Oglethorpe University in the Metro Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven, Georgia, there’s an airtight chamber that is not supposed to be opened until the year 8113. Thornwell Jacobs, the university’s former president, believed that a preserved museum might offer future archaeologists a glimpse into what life was like some 6,000 years before they existed.

1. Westinghouse Time Capsules
Fifty feet beneath Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York are two time capsules that are not to be opened until the year 6939. Both capsules were provided by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company - one during the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and the other in 1965. They were named Time Capsule I and Time Capsule II.

10. The Piri Reis Map
In 1929, a German theologian was cataloging items in the Topkapi Palace Library in Istanbul, and he came across a gazelle skin parchment with an unusual map drawn onto it. Dated back to 1513, it was drawn and signed by Turkish cartographer Hagji Ahmed Muhiddin Piri, an admiral in the Turkish Navy at the time and the map is now known as the Piri Reis map.

In 2001, a group of Israeli archaeologists were shown a stone tablet, supposedly dating back to 1000 BC, with writing that describes repairs that were made to the temple of Solomon… the first evidence ever to have been found about the renowned building. It underwent a series of tests, including radiocarbon dating, before being declared as a genuine artifact.

8. Spanish Hill, Pennsylvania
Spanish Hill, in Pennsylvania, was first described by an explorer in 1795 who said it was ‘the shape of a sugar loaf, about 100 feet high, with a level top, on which are the remains of intrenchments'. Others saw the remains of walls, and further archaeological investigations have found potential evidence of a Native American society, including shell heaps, corn, flint chips, and various other implements.

7. How Alexander the Great Died
By 323 BC, Alexander the Great had secured an empire that stretched from the Balkans to modern day Pakistan, but his at the age of 32 that year has been a mystery ever since. He was on the verge of attacking another empire, when he became ill and, after 12 excruciating days, finally passed away.

6. Otzi
In 1991, the body of a 5,000-year-old mummy, now known as Otzi, was discovered by mountain climbers. The remains of the 45-year-old were remarkably well preserved, which has allowed researchers to examine in detail the causes of this. Despite this, there's a lot that remains unknown, and there's still great debate about how he met his end.

5. Tikal Temple 33
Tikal Temple 33 was a 108-foot-high Maya funerary pyramid that was found in the remains of the Maya city of Tikal, along with a number of other monuments. It was built in three different stages of construction in the year 457 when King Siyaj Chan K'awiil II's shrine was remodeled, and it's one of the most investigated structures of the city.

4. The Cyrus Cylinder
The Cyrus Cylinder is a clay cylinder which is inscribed in Akkadian cuneiform script. It was created in 539 BC on order of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the first Persian empire when he took control of Babylon.

The Sandia Cave in Las Huertas Canyon, New Mexico, was once believed to be a place with vast evidence of the earliest inhabitants to live on the continent, but a set of events has led the archaeological community to question everything that they once thought to be true.

1. The Talpiot Tomb
In 1980, a tomb was unearthed at a burial site in the Talpiot neighborhood of East Jerusalem, and inside there were 10 ossuaries… some of which bore inscriptions that have been translated as saying ‘Jesus son of Joseph’, ‘Mary’, and a few other names associated with the New Testament. These names led some researchers to believe that this was the burial place of the family of Jesus of Nazareth, while many others rejected the idea, saying that these names were very common at the time.

10. Cave of the Jaguar God
The Maya city of Chichén Itzá is one of the most renowned ancient sites in Mexico, but even though it’s been known about and explored for a long time, it continues to provide surprises. In 2018, researchers were trying to look for a sacred well beneath the city, but instead found a series of caves, known as Balamku, which contained more than 150 ritual objects that had laid untouched for more than 1000 years.

9. The Longest Salt Cave
Researchers have recently announced the discovery of the longest known salt cave in the world… one that starts at the southern tip of the dead sea in Israel, and extends more than 6 miles in length. Malham cave is about 2 miles longer than the previous record holder and, like other salt caves, is full of rare and unusual features.

In early 2019 it was announced that the remains of a previously unknown species of human were found in a cave in the Philippines. According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus- twin brothers who had been raised by wolves. The myth also says that there was a cave, known as the Lupercale, where a female wolf nursed them, and now researchers claim to have found its location.
