10. Hanging Coffins
All across central and southern China there are hanging coffins suspended on cliffs or placed in caves or crevices high up in the air. The mystery of the hanging coffins in China is believed to have been started by the Bo people and dates back to 3,000 years ago, although scholars aren’t quite clear why they did this, and most importantly, how they were able to place the coffins in such hard to reach places.

9. Underwater Buddha Statue
Renovation works often reveal long forgotten objects, but workers in the Jiangxi Province couldn’t have possibly expected to find something of such significance as they began construction of a hydropower gate on a reservoir. The work caused the water levels in the area to fall, which revealed a 600-year-old Buddha statue! Looking quite peaceful out over the water.

8. Ancient Murals
In 2013, archaeologists in Shuozhou city made a fascinating discovery… a tomb of a military commander and his wife, both of whom had died more than 1500 years ago. The treasures of the tomb and even the bodies themselves had been looted a long time ago, but a set of colorful murals remained remarkably intact. Covering about 860 square feet of plaster, they are of a man and a woman, who are thought to have been those who were buried in the tomb, in various poses.

7. Giant Cave Hall
In 2017, a team of researchers went to explore a sinkhole in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and they couldn't believe what they found. 6. An Extinct Ape in a Tomb
Tombs are very important historical sites that can tell us a lot about ancient people and how they lived. However, this one took everyone by surprise! One that was discovered in the Shaanxi province went further than that- because it contained the remains of an extinct species of ape.

5. The Truth Behind a Legend
There's an ancient Chinese legend that tells the story of a terrible flood along the Yellow River that, ultimately, led to the formation of the Xia dynasty just under 4000 years ago. According to the myth, a hero, named Yu, learned how to stop the approaching waters by dredging, which allowed him to establish the bronze age dynasty.

4. Huge Gold Find
It's hardly a secret that China is home to some of the richest mineral formations in the world but, in 2017, the country's second-largest gold mining company, the Shandong Gold Group, made an amazing announcement. They had found the largest gold deposit to have ever been discovered in the country.

3. Two New Dinosaurs
Covering such a large area, it’s perhaps no surprise that fossils are often discovered in China. In 2018, researchers announced the discovery of two new species of dinosaur, both of which were types of alvarezsaurus. These dinosaurs were theropods, which means they were meat eaters and were very similar to birds.

2. A Pyramid
When you think of pyramids, you will, of course, be reminded of those in Egypt, and maybe even Mexico…. But what about China? Researchers were excavating a site that was believed to be a part of the great wall, but they soon discovered something completely different. They began to uncover a 4300-year-old walled city, now referred to as Shimao, that is believed to be one of the largest of the ancient world- covering more than 400 hectares.

In 2013 and 2014, researchers began to search inside a mysterious 1700 year tomb and were amazed at the intricate decorations that lay within. Located in the modern-day Xinzhou city, the tomb had been heavily looted, but some ornaments remained, along with some amazing murals.

10. T-Rex
In 2005, something that was previously thought to be impossible was found during an archaeological dig in Montana, and it would take 8 years before scientists could explain what had happened. The discovery was a leg fossil of an adolescent T-Rex, but inside it, there was some tissue that was described as being soft, transparent, and flexible.

9. Tail In Amber
With only fossils to go by, it's difficult to know exactly what species looked like a long time ago, but a discovery in 2015 helped us get a much better idea! Within a lump of amber that was on sale at a market in Myanmar, was a perfectly preserved prehistoric tail- complete with feathers.

8. Homotherium
It had long been thought that Homotherium, a type of saber-toothed cat from Europe, had gone extinct about 300,000 years ago, but analysis of a discovery in 2000 forced researchers to rethink everything.

7. Brachylophosaurus
One of the rarest fossils found in recent times was of a Brachylophosaurus canadensis. It was found in a canyon wall in Montana in the year 2000, and it took a demolition crew to fully remove the 18-foot piece of stone from the cliff. Fossils of the 77 million-year-old duck-billed dinosaur are hardly ever found, but this one was even more special because its skin had also fossilized.

6. Hematite Tubes
The earth is believed to be around 4.55 billion years old, but a recent discovery has found that it wasn't too long until the first signs of life began to emerge. Very few places on the planet have any rocks that are older than 3 billion years, but the places where some survive are the ideal hunting ground for ancient life.

5. Four Legged Snake
The evolutionary history of snakes has long been of interest to researchers- specifically whether they emerged from the oceans without limbs or whether this was an adaptation that developed later on. Fossils to prove one way or another were proving to be elusive, but one discovery that was announced in 2015 changed all that.

4. Protoceratops and Velociraptor
One of the most stunning fossils ever to be found was discovered by a team that was looking at white sandstone cliffs in the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. Dated to around 80 million years ago, it's of two dinosaurs, a Velociraptor, and a Protoceratops, which were fighting each other when they were suddenly buried by a sand flow.

3. Baleen Whale
After originally having been found in 1978 and dismissed as unimportant, scientists returned to a fossil 30 years later and realized it was far more significant than was first thought. It had been discovered in a canyon in Palos Verdes in LA and is believed to be about 14 to 16 million years old.

2. Ichthyosaur
During the time of the dinosaurs, the oceans were just as dangerous as the land, and one of the most dominant predators to ever swim the seas was the Ichthyosaur. They evolved from land-based lizards who returned to the water around 250 million years ago, and the discovery in China of a fossil has given much clearer details of how they gave birth.

1. Nodosaur
In 2011, as a heavy machine operator dug up the ground at the Millenium mine in Alberta, he hit something that was noticeably harder than the surrounding rock. Strange colored lumps of rock started coming out and he realized he had found something unusual… something that turned out to be a very rare type of fossil.

8. Shwe Inn Thein Pagodas
The small village of Indein, located on the western bank of Inle River in the heart of the Myanmar jungles, contains hundreds of pagodas of varying shapes, sizes, and states of decay, as well as a central shrine. The easiest way to access the village is by taking a boat ride down the narrow, foliage-lined Inn Thein Creek, which can only be done during the winter or the rainy season, as it’s too dry in the summer.

7. Beng Mealea
The Cambodian capital of Siem Reap is home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the largest religious monuments in the world. About 25 miles (40 km) east of the main temples is a separate site called Beng Mealea. To get there, you must make an hour-long journey out of Siem Reap down a bumpy, remote road.

6. Calakmul
The remains of the ancient Maya city of Calakmul are located in Campeche, Mexico, deep in the tropical forest of the Tierras Bajas, in the southern central portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This UNESCO World Heritage site is far from most of the region’s modern towns, and getting there requires a long drive.

5. Wat Palad
Tucked into the heart of the jungle in Chiang Mai, Thailand is a temple known as Wat Palad, also called Wat Pha Lat and Wat Sakithaka. Located on Mount Doi Suthep a little outside of town, it’s largely unknown to tourists, despite being named by Thailandee.com as “probably the prettiest forest temple in Chiang Mai province.” To get there, visitors provide their taxi driver with the temple name and are dropped off on the side of the road.

4. Saleshwaram Cave Temple
The Saleshwaram Cave Temple, is located in the Nallamala Forest of India’s Andhra Pradesh district. Getting there isn’t easy, it’s a long climb and a walk so hopefully you are in good shape.
After a 6.2-mile (10 km) drive into the forest, visitors must cover an additional 1.9 miles (3 km) or more on foot.

3. Mount Koya
Mount Koya is a small, secluded mountain-top Buddhist community located in a wooded area of Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture, south of Kyoto and Osaka. Over 100 temples and monasteries are located within Mount Koya, which has been considered a spiritual retreat and one of Japan’s holiest destinations since it was established in the year 819 by a famous monk named Kukai, or Kobo Daishi.

2. La Ciudad Blanca
The Honduran jungle is one of the least-explored places on Earth, and is also the alleged site of a rumored White City, or “City of the Monkey God,” an ancient, abandoned metropolis that was once inhabited by an unknown civilization. In 2012, the suspected site was discovered among a valley located within the Mosquitia Mountains using LIDAR, or “light detection and ranging” technology, which has the capability of finding structures and mapping terrain through even the densest jungle foliage.

1. El Mirador
Deep in the sub-tropical forest of Guatemala’s Petén Department are the tallest known Maya pyramids and the largest Maya city ever discovered. The site is named El Mirador, or “Viewpoint,” after the pyramids, which exceed the height of the surrounding trees. The only options for reaching El Mirador are to take mule trails through the thick jungle or by helicopter.

8. The Old Operating Theater Museum
In early 19th-century England, surgery was performed without anesthesia. While the wealthy were usually lucky enough to have these unimaginably painful and invasive procedures carried out in their homes, people of lesser means were relegated to the additional discomfort of being operated on in hospital wards.

7. Mr. Straw’s House
During the early twentieth century, a successful grocer named William Straw and his wife, Florence, raised two sons at their home in Worksop, England. The home was built in 1905, and in 1923, the couple redecorated it to reflect the styles of the time, with features such as dark furniture and wallpaper, patterned carpets, gilt-framed oil paintings, and thick curtains.

6. Notting Hill Posters
The London Underground began upgrading their Notting Hill Gate station in West London in 2010. As workers carried out the renovations, they discovered a portion of tunnel that had been sealed off at the end of the 1950’s. The area was once used as a link to the Tube for passengers using the elevator, but lost its purpose when the station’s elevators were replaced by escalators.

5. The Ancient City of Qalatga Darband
In September 2017, British archaeologists uncovered the remains of an ancient city thought to have been founded by Alexander the Great. The city, known as Qalatga Darband, had been “lost” for around 2,000 years. Researchers found it while flying drones in a previously out-of-bounds area in northern Iraq.

4. A Lost Chinese Shrine in Oregon
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city of Salem, Oregon was home to a crowded Chinatown filled with tenements, laundries, markets, brothels, and cookhouses. The Chinese population in Salem peaked at a reported 367 in 1890. These residents held a variety of jobs, working primarily in hotels, restaurants, fields, and railroad construction.

3. Fulling Mill Cottage
In 2010, a 78-year-old recluse and former schoolteacher named Fred Saigeman passed away at his home in West Sussex, England. He bequeathed the thatched-roof home, which had been occupied by the Saigeman family since 1870, to a local cat charity known as Cat Welfare Sussex, under the condition that his pets would be cared for and that the home was protected from being demolished or redeveloped.

2. An Abandoned Apartment in Paris
In 2010, a woman named Madame de Florian passed away in the South of France, where she had lived out the remainder of her life after escaping Paris on the eve of the invasion in June of 1940. To the astonishment of the executors of Madame de Florian’s estate, turns out she owned an apartment in the old theater district of Paris.

10. Cave of the Jaguar God
The Maya city of Chichén Itzá is one of the most renowned ancient sites in Mexico, but even though it’s been known about and explored for a long time, it continues to provide surprises. In 2018, researchers were trying to look for a sacred well beneath the city, but instead found a series of caves, known as Balamku, which contained more than 150 ritual objects that had laid untouched for more than 1000 years.

Researchers have recently announced the discovery of the longest known salt cave in the world… one that starts at the southern tip of the dead sea in Israel, and extends more than 6 miles in length. Malham cave is about 2 miles longer than the previous record holder and, like other salt caves, is full of rare and unusual features.

In early 2019 it was announced that the remains of a previously unknown species of human were found in a cave in the Philippines. 10. Captain Kidd’s Treasure
Captain Kidd once hunted pirates for a living, but turned to the dark side in the late 1600s… attacking merchant vessels in the Caribbean and reaching as far as Madagascar. He returned to America, though, and was arrested, sent back to England, and hanged for his crimes in 1701.

9. A Skeleton
In 2015, council workers were carrying out survey work to prepare for building an extension to a primary school in Edinburgh when they made a gruesome discovery… what is believed to be the corpse of a pirate. The bones have been tested and found to have been from a man in his 50’s who lived during the 16th or 17th century.

8. Underground Smuggling Network
Cornwall, in the south-west of England, was a popular place for pirates and smugglers to bring their ill-gotten gains ashore. In 2008 a crew of builders working on the renovation of a waterfront warehouse in the town of Penzance found two escape hatches that led underground. Good name right, get it, pirates of Penzance. The 2-foot square holes have access to two tunnels that stretched beneath the roads to a local pub about 300 yards away.

7. Maps
When you think of pirates plundering treasure, the first things that springs to mind are chests full of gold and jewels, but they weren’t necessarily the most valuable things in their minds. Bartholomew Sharpe was an influential pirate from 1680, who traveled with his 300 men to Panama, where they captured a Spanish ship, the Trinity, and raided Spanish ships along the Pacific coastline of central and South America.

6. The Schiedam
With some pirates living more than 350 years ago, many artifacts that found their way to the seabed have now been covered over, but a storm in 2018 disrupted the sands around Cornwall and led to an amazing discovery. Divers spotted objects, such as hand grenades and cannons, which had come from the wreck of the Schiedam- a ship that had sunk off the Cornish coast in 1684.

5. The Pirate Executions of 1718
It’s well known that when the authorities were able to catch pirates, they usually made an example of them… but documents have been found that survive from 1718 that show that year was a particularly brutal one. Stede Bonnet was a famed pirate of the time, having been involved in the siege of Charleston, South Carolina alongside Blackbeard.

Pirates operated across the world, and recent evidence came to light that showed the first Australian ship to venture into Japanese waters was run by a crew of pirates escaping from Tasmania. There had long been a tale of a ship of convicts venturing into feudal Japan, which at the time was isolated from the rest of the world, but most had dismissed it as nothing more than legend.

‘Black Sam” Bellamy was thought to have been the richest pirate ever, but all trace of him and his crew vanished following the wrecking of their ship, the Whydah Gally, off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717. They had amassed a fortune worth around 120 million dollars in today's currency, but it was only in 2018 that researchers discovered what had happened to them.

2. The Queen Anne’s Revenge
The most famous pirate of all time, Blackbeard, was notorious for his brutality, the burning gunpowder in his beard, and his surprisingly educated demeanor. He and his crew terrorized the waters of North Carolina with their ship ‘The Queen Anne's Revenge'. By the late 1600s, the natural harbor at Port Royal had become the center of the English presence in Jamaica. It was the second largest European city in the new world, and soon became the notorious home of pirates and criminals. 8. THE LOST CITY OF GIANTS
According to ancient Ecuadorian legend, giants once roamed the remote Amazon rainforest and built huge megalithic cities. In 2012, a group of explorers teamed up with some locals to find one of these alleged sites known as the Lost City of Giants. The site contained various megalithic structures, including an irregularly-shaped 260-foot-tall by 260-foot-wide pyramid.

7. AN ANCIENT SHOPPING MALL
In 2013, archaeologists working in the ancient coastal Greek city of Argilos discovered a portico, or a cluster of shops, resembling an ancient strip mall. Around 2,500 years ago, crowds of shoppers regularly flooded the portico, also known as a stoa, which was located near the Aegean Sea. It’s one of the oldest buildings of its type that have been uncovered in northern Greece.

6. THE LOST ISLAND OF KANE
Ancient records frequently mention an island called Kane, or Canae, which contained a city by the same name. The historical Battle of Arginusae was fought on this island in 406 BC, resulting in an Athenian defeat over the Spartans in the Peloponnesian War. Although historians were pretty confident that Kane existed, they were unable to find it until 2015, when it was rediscovered in Turkish territory in the Aegean Sea.

5. THE GIANT SKULLS OF LOVELOCK CAVE
According to a legend among various Native American tribes, including the Paiute, a race of giants roamed the Nevada region thousands of years ago. The Paiute term for them is Si-Te-Cah. In the myths, the giants are described as tall, strong, and redhaired, and were known for being cruel, barbaric, and cannibalistic. They came from a distant island and crossed the ocean on rafts made out of tule plants, or so the story goes.

4. SAI ISLAND TOMBS
During the 1970’s, excavations on the northern Sudanese island of Sai led to the discovery of 24 Ancient Egyptian tombs. Archaeologists predicted that they’d find more graves on Sai, since it was one of the biggest islands in the Nile Valley and once contained an Egyptian settlement and a gold mine, so they kept digging.

3. Chichén Itzá
This four-square-mile (10 sq. km.) complex of ancient Maya ruins is located on the eastern side of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Throughout Chichén Itzá’s 1,000-year history, the pre-Hispanic city and sacred site became one of the region’s major Mayan centers. Various manuscripts have dated the settlement’s beginnings to somewhere between 415 and 455 AD.

2. CLIFF PALACE
This 150-room cliff dwelling was built around 900 years ago by a Native American pueblo tribe called the Anasazi. It’s located within the Four Corners region of Colorado, in Mesa Verde National Park. Some archaeologists believe that Cliff Palace was a sort of social center for the Anasazi, but it was most likely an apartment building. It contains 23 sunken ceremonial areas known as kivas and likely housed about 100 people.

1. THE UNFINISHED OBELISK
In the northern region of the stone quarries of Ancient Egypt in Aswan, about 500 miles north of Cairo, you’ll find the largest-ever ancient obelisk, known simply-and appropriately- as the Unfinished Obelisk. An obelisk is a four-sided, tapered monument that was typically placed at the entrance of a temple. These structures are considered trademarks of Ancient Egyptian innovativeness and engineering, and several civilizations, including the Romans, admired them so much, they built their own.

9. Skeleton in the Driveway
A man named Bertie Currie was doing some work on his land where he owned a bar in Northern Ireland. He was trying to make a driveway, but instead found himself looking at some human bones. He called the police, and they were able to determine that luckily, he wasn't sitting on a murder scene because the bones were much older.

8. Pictish Anvil
The Pictish people were a “lost people” that we know very little about. They were called the Picti, or Painted people by the Romans and they were a confederation of tribes located in Northern Scotland.
In 2016, archaeologists found an unusual artifact on the island of Rousay: an anvil that is believed to be 1,500 years old.

7. Otzi The Iceman
In 1991, two German hikers were climbing through the Alps when they came across a frozen body. At first, they thought it was the body of a hiker, like them, who had gotten trapped in the snow and so they called the police. It turns out the body was over 5,000 years old. This makes him older than the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge! Nicknamed Otzi, the mummy of this ancient man is actually Europe’s oldest naturally formed mummy (as he was not embalmed by human hands).

6. Mega Stonehenge
The mystery of Stonehenge (both in terms of construction and its true purpose) is something that has puzzled scientists, researchers, archaeologists, and people in general, for centuries. But what some don't realize, is that just two miles away from Stonehenge is another structure that is even bigger, and even more puzzling in some ways. Its name...is Mega Stonehenge, or Superhenge, whichever you prefer!

5. Horses and Chariot
There are a lot of ancient weapons and vehicles that have been found during archaeological digs. But in Bulgaria, they found something they didn't expect, an extremely well-preserved carriage and its two horses. But the strangest thing was that they were found buried in an upright position. Pillows of some kind were even placed under the horses heads to keep them propped up.

4. Prehistoric Cult Complex
Cults may be something you would associate with the modern world, but they have been around for awhile!, At least as far as the Stone Age! This came via a discovery in Bulgaria, where a team of archaeologists found a prehistoric complex on the island in Durankulak Lake. The complex or city was completely made out of stone, and one of the buildings dated back to 5500 BC, which would make it the oldest prehistoric stone building in Europe!!

3. Britain's "Pompeii"
During an archaeological dig in Cambridgeshire in Great Britain, a rather large wheel was found. It was traced back to the Bronze Age, which was impressive given the size of the wheel and the fact that it was made entirely out of planks made of oak.
