10. Bakoni, South Africa
In South Africa, on the hills around Machadodorp to the southeast of the country, are the remains of a series of structures built by the Bakoni people. The hilly countryside is covered with terraces made of stone walls and large complex of ruins.

9. The African City of Stone, Zimbabwe
The Country of Zimbabwe actually took its name, in 1980, from this archaeological site…. The ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. This city of stone was the center of the region between the 10th and 15th centuries and covered an area of around 1779 acres. Now, the structures that remain include a number of stone enclosures, some of which are as tall as 36 feet (11 m).

8. Gedi, Kenya
First found in 1884…. The Gedi ruins, in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest in Kilifi, Kenya, are all that remains of an ancient town- one that continues to be a mystery to archaeologists. There are no written records of Gedi, but the structures and artifacts that have been found there show evidence of a once thriving town that was both advanced and affluent before its demise at some point in the 17th century.

7. The Lalibela Churches, Ethiopia
In the center of Ethiopia, about 400 miles from the capital city Addis Ababa, there’s a mountainous region that was once a site of religious significance. Here, 11 monolithic churches were carved into the rock, thought to have been built by King Lalibela in an attempt to build a ‘New Jerusalem’ in the 12th century after Muslim conquests prevented Christians from being able to travel to their holy city.

6. The Stone Circles of Senegambia
The stone circles of Senegambia are a series of megalithic structures that cover an area 62 miles wide along a 200 mile stretch of the river Gambia. It’s not certain when the monuments were built, with estimates ranging between 2300 and 400 years ago. Along with the stonework, pottery, graves, and pieces of metal have also been found… showing signs of a fairly advanced society.

5. A Lost Tswana City, South Africa
The Difaqane civil wars in the 1820’s led to the collapse of the majority of Tswana city-states, that once stood strong along the northern parts of South Africa. Many of them were never even documented before being abandoned, and are only now being re-discovered.

4. The Ledi Jaw, Ethiopia
As the continent where the human species developed, there are still a lot of questions about our ancestral lineage- some that have been answered recently by the discovery of the Ledi Jaw. There’s a big gap in our knowledge about how our own Homo genus evolved.

3. Meroë, Sudan
Egypt is, of course, well known for its pyramids… but it’s not the only country in Africa where they were built. In the desert to the east of Sudan, along the river Nile, there’s a series of almost 200 ancient pyramids, with most of them serving as tombs for the leaders of the Meroitic Kingdom.

2. Laas Geel, Somalia
Laas Geel, which means ‘source of water for camels’, is a series of rock shelters and caves that lie about 34 miles northeast of the capital city of Somaliland, Hargeisa. The site is now dry, but it's near the confluence of two former rivers, which would explain why it was once known as a water source and a place with extensive evidence of human activity.

1. Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania
In northern Tanzania, the Olduvai Gorge is where some of the most important discoveries have been made about our ancient ancestors. Archaeologists and Paleoanthropologists have worked in the area for more than a century, and have found stone tools and bones dating back millions of years. This means that we humans evolved in Africa.

8. No Oxygen?
In 2010, a research team discovered evidence of an animal that lives entirely without oxygen at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea - one of the most extreme environments on Earth. Who knew? This species belongs to an unusual group called the loriciferans, which wasn’t discovered until the 1980s. Loriciferans live in muddy sediments at the bottom of the sea, which theoretically should contain enough oxygen for them to breathe.

7. Why do we age?
According to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, individuals with traits that prevent aging would hypothetically supersede their peers, and characteristics associated with aging would eventually fail to be genetically passed on to future generations.

6. Why do we have a dominant hand?
The term “handedness” simply means the tendency to be right- or left-handed. Between 85 and 90 percent of all humans are right-handed, which makes sense, since the left hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for speech and writing - controls the right hand. The right hemisphere of the brain is associated with imagination and creativity and controls the left hand.

5. Why do we have an appendix?
The human appendix has long been categorized as an “evolutionary holdover,” or an essentially useless or decreasingly necessary body part that once served a major function, such as wisdom teeth, pinky toes, and tailbones. The ability to remove the appendix without any major drawbacks has historically been perceived as evidence of the organ’s inconsequentiality.

4. Monarch Butterfly Migration
The Great Migration of monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico is one of nature’s greatest journeys - and, until recently, one of its biggest mysteries. Monarch butterflies are the only insects to migrate such a vast distance, and no single butterfly has ever lived through an entire migration cycle. Throughout the two-month journey, the traveling butterflies cycle through several generations.

3. Where did Ebola come from?
When it comes to Ebola, there are two big mysteries: Where did ebola come from and where does it hide between outbreaks? The West African Ebola epidemic ended in April 2016. Ebola resurfaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Spring of 2018 and quickly spread from the countryside to the city of Mbandaka, which has a population of around 350,000.

Homing is the innate ability of certain animals to navigate through unfamiliar areas toward an original location, such as a breeding area or a home territory. In other words, always finding your way back home, even after being displaced, or traveling great distances.

1. What are placozoans?
Placozoans are the simplest of all known non-parasitic multicellular animals. These three-layered organisms are small, flat, and roughly one-to-three millimeters in diameter. They contain the smallest amount of DNA of any animal and can reproduce both sexually and asexually.

10. Finding Someone
Nowadays we think of DNA testing as an integral part of identifying, but the ability has only been around for just over 30 years. In the 80's the idea of genetic fingerprints was unheard of- that was until a case was solved by using this innovative technique- and it changed investigations forever!!

9. Mummy Identity
In 1940, an ancient skeleton, known as the “Spirit Cave Mummy” was found in a cave in the Great Basin Desert in Nevada. Those who unearthed it knew that this find was an important discovery, but it would be decades until scientific techniques were developed to find out more about it.

8. The Recipe for Milk
Milk is something we all take for granted- after all, it’s available in virtually every food or drink store in the world. Despite its prevalence, though, milk is actually a very complex liquid, and it was only recently that genetic sequencing was able to explain how it’s made.

7. Identifying Smugglers
The ivory trade is one of the biggest contributors to the decline in numbers of elephants around the world, and the high prices people are willing to pay for it means that, despite it being illegal, it's estimated that as many as 40,000 African elephants are killed each year solely for their tusks. With a population of only 400,000, the need for action is greater than ever.

6. Triple Hybrid Bird
In May of 2018, a Pennsylvania local spotted an unusual looking bird in his backyard. He took photos and videos of it, and then realized something strange- it looked like both a Golden-winged Warbler, and a Blue-winged Warbler, and was singing like a Chestnut-sided Warbler.

5. The Tigrina
The improvement in genetic profiling techniques, as well as the way that more animals are being tested than ever, means that scientists are quite often discovering new species, and learning far more about the ones we thought had already been identified.

4. Debunking Alien Theories
In 2003, in an old mining town in the Atacama desert, a small skeleton was found, wrapped in white cloth and tied with a violet ribbon. It was extremely unusual- it was about 6 inches tall, with the features of a 7-year-old child, but only had 10 pairs of ribs- as opposed to the 12 found on humans. Furthermore, the skull was elongated into a cone shape.

3. Panda Ancestor
In 2014, a team of paleontologists were searching a cave in China in search of remains of an ancient ape species. They returned that day with a collection of bones, none of which were from the ape, but what they did find was the lower jaw of an ancient panda that lived around 22,000 years ago.

2. Food Contents
When we buy food at a store, we check the labeling to see what's in it and take that as the truth. The thing is, due to the way that meat is processed, there's a good chance that what you think you're eating may not be the full story. 10. Metallic Hydrogen
Hydrogen is an element that's present throughout the Universe, and we see it every day here on earth, usually in combination with oxygen to form water. On its own, it behaves like any other element… It's a gas at temperatures above -400 degrees Fahrenheit, a liquid above -434 degrees Fahrenheit, and a solid when it's colder than that.

9. Pure Aluminum
A lot of what we know about materials in space comes from analyzing the remnants of meteorites that have fallen to earth. A particularly unusual rock was found in Egypt in 1996, which contained an unusual form of a metal that we're very familiar with… Aluminum.

8. The Horsehead Nebula
The Horsehead Nebula, which lies approximately 1,500 light years away from earth, is one of the most recognizable interstellar phenomena because of its unique shape… but there's far more to this mass of dust and gas than initially seems, and scientists have been studying its composition in further detail.

7. Hapkeite
Not all meteorites that land on earth have come from the furthest stretches of the solar system! This next guy actually originated from our nearest galactic neighbor, the moon! Discovered in the early 2000s in Oman on the Saudi peninsula, analysis of the piece of moon rock exposed a completely new material that’s made from iron and silicon.

6. Krotite
Around 2003, a very strange meteorite was found in North Africa, one which is often referred to as the cracked egg meteorite because of its unusual appearance. More recently, scientists who were examining the meteorite found a material, about the size of a grain of rice, that they didn't recognize.

5. Quasicrystals
Quasicrystals are an unusual type of material where the atoms inside arrange themselves in regular patterns, but ones that never repeat themselves. Neighboring cells have slight variations, but follow clear mathematical rules in a similar way to the Fibonacci sequence. More than 100 different types of quasicrystal are known, and they are used in products such as non-stick cookware, LED lighting, and surgical instruments.

4. Panguite
The Allende meteorite was the largest carbonaceous chondrite to have ever been found on earth. These primitive meteorites account for just under 5 percent of the ones that fall and have their roots in the early solar system. This one fell over the Mexican state of Chihuahua on February 8th, 1969 and exploded in the atmosphere- scattering debris across the region.

3. Uakitite
In 2018, researchers at the Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society in Moscow announced a particularly exciting find for them, as they had discovered a completely new mineral after examining a space rock. Known as Uakitite, it was found in the Uakit meteorite. This meteorite was found in the region of Russia after which it was named.

2. Wassonite
Yamato 691 was a meteorite found in Antarctica 50 years ago, but it was only recently that scientists realized there was something strange about its structure. Upon closer inspection, they found microscopic crystals inside it, that were unfamiliar. The problem was that they only measured between 50 and 450 nanometres across, which made them incredibly difficult to analyze.

Ever since humans have manipulated materials for their own means, they've always looked for the next strongest substance to work with. At first, this was rock, then iron, then steel, and now composites and graphene… but researchers now think they’ve discovered what is the strongest substance in the entire universe, something they call ‘nuclear pasta’.

10. Captain Kidd’s Treasure
Captain Kidd once hunted pirates for a living, but turned to the dark side in the late 1600s… attacking merchant vessels in the Caribbean and reaching as far as Madagascar. He returned to America, though, and was arrested, sent back to England, and hanged for his crimes in 1701.

9. A Skeleton
In 2015, council workers were carrying out survey work to prepare for building an extension to a primary school in Edinburgh when they made a gruesome discovery… what is believed to be the corpse of a pirate. The bones have been tested and found to have been from a man in his 50’s who lived during the 16th or 17th century.

8. Underground Smuggling Network
Cornwall, in the south-west of England, was a popular place for pirates and smugglers to bring their ill-gotten gains ashore. In 2008 a crew of builders working on the renovation of a waterfront warehouse in the town of Penzance found two escape hatches that led underground. Good name right, get it, pirates of Penzance. The 2-foot square holes have access to two tunnels that stretched beneath the roads to a local pub about 300 yards away.

7. Maps
When you think of pirates plundering treasure, the first things that springs to mind are chests full of gold and jewels, but they weren’t necessarily the most valuable things in their minds. Bartholomew Sharpe was an influential pirate from 1680, who traveled with his 300 men to Panama, where they captured a Spanish ship, the Trinity, and raided Spanish ships along the Pacific coastline of central and South America.

6. The Schiedam
With some pirates living more than 350 years ago, many artifacts that found their way to the seabed have now been covered over, but a storm in 2018 disrupted the sands around Cornwall and led to an amazing discovery. Divers spotted objects, such as hand grenades and cannons, which had come from the wreck of the Schiedam- a ship that had sunk off the Cornish coast in 1684.

5. The Pirate Executions of 1718
It’s well known that when the authorities were able to catch pirates, they usually made an example of them… but documents have been found that survive from 1718 that show that year was a particularly brutal one. Stede Bonnet was a famed pirate of the time, having been involved in the siege of Charleston, South Carolina alongside Blackbeard.

4. Visiting Japan
Pirates operated across the world, and recent evidence came to light that showed the first Australian ship to venture into Japanese waters was run by a crew of pirates escaping from Tasmania. There had long been a tale of a ship of convicts venturing into feudal Japan, which at the time was isolated from the rest of the world, but most had dismissed it as nothing more than legend.

3. Mass Burial
‘Black Sam” Bellamy was thought to have been the richest pirate ever, but all trace of him and his crew vanished following the wrecking of their ship, the Whydah Gally, off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717. They had amassed a fortune worth around 120 million dollars in today's currency, but it was only in 2018 that researchers discovered what had happened to them.

2. The Queen Anne’s Revenge
The most famous pirate of all time, Blackbeard, was notorious for his brutality, the burning gunpowder in his beard, and his surprisingly educated demeanor. He and his crew terrorized the waters of North Carolina with their ship ‘The Queen Anne's Revenge'. Perhaps his most famous act was the siege of Charleston in 1718, where the city was held hostage for several weeks while he demanded food, money, and supplies…

1. The Sunken Pirate City
By the late 1600s, the natural harbor at Port Royal had become the center of the English presence in Jamaica. It was the second largest European city in the new world, and soon became the notorious home of pirates and criminals. This soon became a dangerous place full of debauchery, and was once described as ‘the most wicked and sinful city in the world'.

10. The Pink Lake
Usually, you'd think of a lake as being deep blue, or gray, or maybe a less appealing color because of pollution…but what about bright pink? Well, that's what a number of lakes in Australia are like, and for a long time, it was completely unclear what made them that way.

9. The Sleeping City of Kalachi
Since March of 2013, the residents of two towns in Kazakhstan... Kalachi and Krasnogorsk, have suffered from a peculiar illness. With a combined population of 810 people, the dusty towns on the Kazakh Steppe were hidden away and almost no one had even heard of them. Until more than 140 people became affected by a mysterious sleeping disease.

8. Pennsylvania’s Ringing Rocks
As the name would suggest, the 128-acre Ringing Rocks county park in Pennsylvania has a number of rocks in an 8-acre area that exhibit some unusual qualities. Normally, if you were to clunk a rock, you'd expect to hear a thud sound, but the ones here do something completely different- they emit a metal clang when hit with a hammer or another rock. The sound is so strange, that you'd think they were hollow and made of metal, as opposed to being made from stone.

7. The Petrifying Well
The river Nidd, in the county of Yorkshire, England, is home to one of the oldest ‘charging' attractions in England… a well that's thought to have been cursed by the devil. What's unusual about this place is that whatever object is left in the waters will, eventually, turn to stone. People realized the side of the well looks like a giant's skull, and either avoided it altogether or began to leave belongings near the well to watch them slowly turn to stone in a matter of weeks.

6. The Darvaza Gas Crater
The Darvaza gas crater, known by locals as ‘the door to’, is about 150 miles away from the capital city of Turkmenistan, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. It’s a sinister looking place- even more so on the days that desert creatures are attracted to the flames… sometimes swarms of thousands of spiders can be seen plummeting into the pit, suckered in by the hypnotic fires.

5. Socotra Island
Where's the most otherworldly place on earth that you can think of? In terms of plant life, it has to be the Socotra archipelago in the Indian Ocean… about 250 miles away from Somalia.

4. The Everlasting Lightning Storm
Usually, when there's a thunderstorm, you can just watch the light show from indoors and wait for it to pass. There's one place in the world, though, where there's a virtually continuous lightning storm… over the mouth of the Catatumbo River in Venezuela.

3. The Blood Falls
First discovered in 1911, Antarctica's blood falls became famous for their grotesque appearance. Water from a river had stained the surrounding ice with a dark red hue, which was thought to be caused by algae in the water.

2. Kawah Ijen
When you think of a volcanic eruption, the glowing red lava probably comes to mind… but what if that color was blue? Well, that's what happens at Mount Ijen in East Java. Not only is this unusual place a popular tourist attraction, but it’s also one of the most dangerous work environments in the world.

1. Movile Cave
Movile Cave is a deadly and inhospitable place, but it’s been separated from the rest of the world for so long that things work a little differently down here. It's in the southeast of Romania and was cut off from the rest of the world for 5.5 million years. The cave was discovered in 1986 by workers testing the ground to see if it would be a good place for a power plant.
