8. Mermaids
Mermaids have been both romanticised and villanised in fiction. We have our lovable Little Mermaid, Ariel, who just wants to be connected with the human world. But then again, we also have the evil but beautiful sirens who would sooner lead humans to their while making them fall in love with their music.

7. The Beast of Dartmoor
In the southwest of England, a cluster of moors called Dartmoor is home to a lot of creepy stories and sightings. A lot of people claim that certain areas of Dartmoor are haunted which can easily be shrugged off. However, many people have not only seen this next creature, but they’ve taken pictures of it. Maybe you have!!!

6. Zombies
Many people actually believe that zombies are real.14% of Americans believe there is a small chance of a zombie apocalypse coming. All the zombie shows and movies aren’t helping so maybe these unreal creatures don’t need that much of an explanation...

5. Loch Ness Monster
Supposedly, the Loch Ness Monster inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Last year, 2017, was a great year for Nessie sightings!! Many people have snapped pictures of what they believed to be the fabled sea serpent but they’ve always been on pixelated phones or the image moved too quickly to be able to clarify for certain whether or not it is the creature.

4. Dracula
While I could delve into the vast world of vampires throughout history, I’ll just focus on the most famous vampire that there is - Count Dracula. While Bram Stoker’s novel is entirely fictional, he was inspired by someone who is probably the closest historical evidence that we have of a real vampire.

3. Unicorns
Now you have unicorn everything!! You can’t step into a clothing store anywhere without seeing something with a unicorn on it. Unicorn makeup, glitter, tears...Starbucks even created a unicorn inspired frappuccino. But where did the idea of unicorns come from? Do people still think they can see them?

2. Bigfoot
This list would be incomplete without Big Foot. The sasquatch creature has been an unexplained phenomena for many years. Many people have claimed to have seen him themselves, there’s multiple pictures and videos but none of them are definitive evidence. Like any film taken on an old camera phone, they’re not entirely clear and could be anything - similarly to the Beast of Dartmoor.

1. Mummies
The idea of mummies has been scaring children - and some adults - for years. Especially if you’ve seen Scooby Doo, you know that the zombie-like Egyptians can be quite terrifying. Of course, mummification was very real, which is perhaps what makes them so creepy.

9. Dwarves
The dwarves were master smiths and craftspeople who lived underground in a place called Svartalfheim. Their home was believed to be a complex of labyrinths containing forges and mines.

8. Elves
Rumored to be more beautiful than the sun, the elves were tall, slim demi-gods with pale features that inhabited the realm of Alfheim, ruled by the god Freyr. Also called Ljósálfar, for the most part, elves stayed out of human affairs. The limited relationship between elves and humans was an ambivalent one.

7. Valkyries
Valkyries were beautiful maidens who served the god Odin. The name “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain”, and while that was true, they were also able to decide who died in battle and use malicious magic to ensure that things played out according to their plan.

6. Jormungand
Also known as the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand was a massive, dragon-like sea serpent who lived in the ocean surrounding Midgard, the visible world. He was so huge, his body wrapped entirely around it.

5. Draugar
Draugar were undead creatures with superhuman strength - they were essentially the zombies of Norse mythology. Their swollen and blackened appearance resembled that of a rotting corpse and they stunk of decay.

4. Fenrir
There are many wolves of Norse mythology, and Fenrir was the most infamous of them all. He was the brother of the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand. Like his sibling, Fenrir grew astonishingly fast, eventually causing the gods to chain him in an attempt to keep him under control.

3. Ratatoskr
Ratatoskr was a squirrel who ran up and down Yggdrasil, the tree of life, delivering messages between enemies. By all accounts, he had the appearance of a typical squirrel.

2. Fossegrim
Fossegrim, also known simply as grim, was a water spirit and an exceptionally talented fiddler who was most often depicted as a semi-clothed male fairy. He mimicked the sounds of the forest, wind, and water with his fiddle and you could sometimes convince him to teach the skill.

1. Mare
The Mare is what nightmares are made of - literally. This malicious monster slipped through cracks in walls and floors and “rode” on people’s chests while they slept, causing them to have awful dreams and, in some cases, sleep paralysis. In some variations of the myth, she specifically targeted men.

10. Hanging Coffins
All across central and southern China there are hanging coffins suspended on cliffs or placed in caves or crevices high up in the air. The mystery of the hanging coffins in China is believed to have been started by the Bo people and dates back to 3,000 years ago, although scholars aren’t quite clear why they did this, and most importantly, how they were able to place the coffins in such hard to reach places.

9. Underwater Buddha Statue
Renovation works often reveal long forgotten objects, but workers in the Jiangxi Province couldn’t have possibly expected to find something of such significance as they began construction of a hydropower gate on a reservoir. The work caused the water levels in the area to fall, which revealed a 600-year-old Buddha statue! Looking quite peaceful out over the water.

8. Ancient Murals
In 2013, archaeologists in Shuozhou city made a fascinating discovery… a tomb of a military commander and his wife, both of whom had died more than 1500 years ago. The treasures of the tomb and even the bodies themselves had been looted a long time ago, but a set of colorful murals remained remarkably intact. Covering about 860 square feet of plaster, they are of a man and a woman, who are thought to have been those who were buried in the tomb, in various poses.

7. Giant Cave Hall
In 2017, a team of researchers went to explore a sinkhole in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and they couldn't believe what they found. Deep in the misty valleys in the ominous looking hole, is one of the most stunning cave halls in the world. To get there requires going down a rope at least 200 meters long (656 feet

6. An Extinct Ape in a Tomb
Tombs are very important historical sites that can tell us a lot about ancient people and how they lived. However, this one took everyone by surprise! One that was discovered in the Shaanxi province went further than that- because it contained the remains of an extinct species of ape.

5. The Truth Behind a Legend
There's an ancient Chinese legend that tells the story of a terrible flood along the Yellow River that, ultimately, led to the formation of the Xia dynasty just under 4000 years ago. According to the myth, a hero, named Yu, learned how to stop the approaching waters by dredging, which allowed him to establish the bronze age dynasty.

4. Huge Gold Find
It's hardly a secret that China is home to some of the richest mineral formations in the world but, in 2017, the country's second-largest gold mining company, the Shandong Gold Group, made an amazing announcement. They had found the largest gold deposit to have ever been discovered in the country.

3. Two New Dinosaurs
Covering such a large area, it’s perhaps no surprise that fossils are often discovered in China. In 2018, researchers announced the discovery of two new species of dinosaur, both of which were types of alvarezsaurus. These dinosaurs were theropods, which means they were meat eaters and were very similar to birds.

2. A Pyramid
When you think of pyramids, you will, of course, be reminded of those in Egypt, and maybe even Mexico…. But what about China? Researchers were excavating a site that was believed to be a part of the great wall, but they soon discovered something completely different. They began to uncover a 4300-year-old walled city, now referred to as Shimao, that is believed to be one of the largest of the ancient world- covering more than 400 hectares.

1. Blue Monster Tomb
In 2013 and 2014, researchers began to search inside a mysterious 1700 year tomb and were amazed at the intricate decorations that lay within. Located in the modern-day Xinzhou city, the tomb had been heavily looted, but some ornaments remained, along with some amazing murals.

10. T-Rex
In 2005, something that was previously thought to be impossible was found during an archaeological dig in Montana, and it would take 8 years before scientists could explain what had happened. The discovery was a leg fossil of an adolescent T-Rex, but inside it, there was some tissue that was described as being soft, transparent, and flexible.

9. Tail In Amber
With only fossils to go by, it's difficult to know exactly what species looked like a long time ago, but a discovery in 2015 helped us get a much better idea! Within a lump of amber that was on sale at a market in Myanmar, was a perfectly preserved prehistoric tail- complete with feathers.

8. Homotherium
It had long been thought that Homotherium, a type of saber-toothed cat from Europe, had gone extinct about 300,000 years ago, but analysis of a discovery in 2000 forced researchers to rethink everything.

7. Brachylophosaurus
One of the rarest fossils found in recent times was of a Brachylophosaurus canadensis. It was found in a canyon wall in Montana in the year 2000, and it took a demolition crew to fully remove the 18-foot piece of stone from the cliff. Fossils of the 77 million-year-old duck-billed dinosaur are hardly ever found, but this one was even more special because its skin had also fossilized.

6. Hematite Tubes
The earth is believed to be around 4.55 billion years old, but a recent discovery has found that it wasn't too long until the first signs of life began to emerge. Very few places on the planet have any rocks that are older than 3 billion years, but the places where some survive are the ideal hunting ground for ancient life.

5. Four Legged Snake
The evolutionary history of snakes has long been of interest to researchers- specifically whether they emerged from the oceans without limbs or whether this was an adaptation that developed later on. Fossils to prove one way or another were proving to be elusive, but one discovery that was announced in 2015 changed all that.

4. Protoceratops and Velociraptor
One of the most stunning fossils ever to be found was discovered by a team that was looking at white sandstone cliffs in the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. Dated to around 80 million years ago, it's of two dinosaurs, a Velociraptor, and a Protoceratops, which were fighting each other when they were suddenly buried by a sand flow.

3. Baleen Whale
After originally having been found in 1978 and dismissed as unimportant, scientists returned to a fossil 30 years later and realized it was far more significant than was first thought. It had been discovered in a canyon in Palos Verdes in LA and is believed to be about 14 to 16 million years old.

2. Ichthyosaur
During the time of the dinosaurs, the oceans were just as dangerous as the land, and one of the most dominant predators to ever swim the seas was the Ichthyosaur. They evolved from land-based lizards who returned to the water around 250 million years ago, and the discovery in China of a fossil has given much clearer details of how they gave birth.

1. Nodosaur
In 2011, as a heavy machine operator dug up the ground at the Millenium mine in Alberta, he hit something that was noticeably harder than the surrounding rock. Strange colored lumps of rock started coming out and he realized he had found something unusual… something that turned out to be a very rare type of fossil.

7. NEKO
Thanks to her exceptionally well-hidden grave on the Greek island of Sikinos, a noblewoman named Neko and her precious gold jewelry remained undiscovered for 1,800 years. Greek archaeologists discovered Neko’s grave in 2018. Grave robbers didn’t miss out on her treasures for a lack of trying - in fact, they hit various other tombs on Sikinos, which is part of the Cyclades archipelago.

6. MAGNETIC STATUES
In a park within a small town called La Democracia, which is located near the Pacific Guatemalan coast, there’s a series of 11 ancient stone “potbelly” sculptures on display. Surprisingly, these sculptures are magnetized on certain parts, indicating that the pre-Columbian civilization that crafted them may have had a knowledge of magnetism.

5. SANDBY BORG
Around 1,600 years ago, a gruesome fight occurred at a fort called Sandby Borg on Sweden’s Öland Island. Hundreds of people were killed in the attack and left unburied. After the attack, the site was left alone by neighbors, leading researchers to believe that it was considered a taboo place.

4. Panga ya Saidi
The 1,076-square-foot main chamber of the Panga Ya Saidi cave network in Kenya’s Rift Valley bears evidence of 78,000 continuous years of human occupation. Let that sink in for a minute! It sits where grassland meets with coastal tropical forest, thus providing its former inhabitants with the convenient ability to exploit resources from both environments.

3. THOUSANDS OF TEETH
On two separate occasions in 2018, batches of over 1,000 teeth were discovered in different parts of the world. Last year, archaeologists conducting a preliminary excavation at the site of a future subway station began uncovering teeth. They ultimately collected over 1,000 teeth, which were estimated to be around a century old.

2. ATA
In 2003, someone discovered a naturally-mummified, six-inch-tall skeleton near a ghost town in the Chilean Atacama Desert. The skeleton was female and had unusually hard bones for her size, as well as a conical-shaped head. Rumors quickly spread that the skeleton was that of an alien. In 2012, a doctor named Steven Greer analyzed the skeleton, who was named Ata, using x-ray and CT imaging.

1. A RARE PAINTING OF JESUS
Earlier this year, archaeologists from the University of Haifa announced the discovery of a rare early painting of Jesus inside an ancient church in the Israeli village of Shivta. The 1,500-year-old depiction of Jesus looks quite different from the popular Western image of him. It was found in the Negev Desert of southern Israel among the ruins of a Byzantine-era farming village.

10. Mount Roraima
This giant plateau soars up into the sky and is often surrounded by a sea of clouds. It has its own very unique ecosystem with many tall waterfalls and highly specialized plant and animal species such as pitcher plants and the Roraima bush toad. Located on the border of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil, 75% of the mountain is in Venezuelan territory.

9. Pripyat
Following the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986, thousands of people were evacuated from the neighboring city of Pripyat. Over 30 years later, most of the town is still there, frozen in time and left to decay.

8. McMurdo Dry Valleys
The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a row of snow-free valleys in Antarctica. What? No snow in Antarctica???
That’s right. The Dry Valleys have extremely low humidity levels and the mountains around the valley prevent any ice from flowing down around it from glaciers.

7. Abandoned Military Hospital
Beelitz-Heilstätten is a district in Beelitz, Germany that is made famous by a hospital complex that contains almost 60 buildings. At first, the complex was built to treat TB and then became a sanatorium . But at the beginning of the first war, it became a military hospital.

6. Travertine Pools of Pamukkale
Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish which makes sense, once you see the pools in this place! They are made up of hot springs and travertines which are terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water.

5. Richat Structure
The Richat Structure or the Eye of the Sahara is a mysterious round formation found in the Sahara near Mauritania.
It appears to be some sort of sci-fi experiment, but it is actually a deeply eroded, slightly elliptical dome that is 25 miles wide.

4. Shicheng, China
Shicheng City or China’s Atlantis or Lion City, is an underwater city in the Chinese province of Zhejiang. This city is strange for two reasons! It was forgotten and lost for thousands of years…and it has survived remarkably well underwater!

3. Fly Geyser
Likely the most beautiful geyser in the world, Fly Geyser can be found in Washoe County, Nevada. It is just 5 feet high, by 12 feet wide. So why is it is amazing or mysterious? Well look at it! It isn’t natural, but rather the result of a test site after a geothermal power company drilled into the rock.




2. The Maunsell Sea Forts
From afar, these guys look kind of like oil rigs or something, but they’re really just old sea forts known as the Maunsell Forts. These were built during WWII to help defend the UK. Each fort has built-in firearms and were originally used by both army and navy personnel, a rare occurrence.

If the name isn’t enough to scare you, wait till you hear the story behind the Gates of Hell. Officially known as the Darvaza gas crater, the “door” is actually a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan. When seen up close, which you never ever really want to be, you will see fire, boiling mud, and orange flames in the hole.

8. BURMESE PYTHON
27 years ago, southern Florida was ravaged by Hurricane Andrew. The category 5 hurricane was the most destructive tropical storm to hit the state until Irma passed through during late 2017, and the damage was extensive. One unexpected consequence of Hurricane Andrew was the release of captive Burmese pythons into the regional ecosystem.

7. GREEN IGUANA
The green iguana is Florida’s most invasive species, due largely to the uninformed decision of many people to get one as a pet without realizing how much care they require. Iguanas need lots of food, become hostile during mating season, and can grow up to five feet long (1.5 m).

6. NILE MONITOR
Thanks yet again to pet owners not knowing how to handle their unwanted reptiles, Africa’s largest lizard now also bears the distinction of being Florida’s largest lizard. The Nile monitor was first spotted in Cape Coral in 1990, after most likely being abandoned by an aspiring exotic pet owner who was ill-prepared for the responsibilities associated with caring for the large and intelligent species.

5. AFRICAN CLAWED FROG
In 2016, researchers from the University of Florida discovered a local population of the African clawed frog. While the frog is known to breed in various parts of the world, their presence in Florida was previously unknown. African clawed frogs have been commonly used since the 1930’s as specimens for biological research, and were also popular for determining if a woman was pregnant until the 1970’s, when modern pregnancy tests came long.

4. GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAIL
After these three animals on today’s list, it should come as no surprise to you that Florida has also been invaded by the world’s largest terrestrial mollusk, or the giant African land snail, which grows to eight inches (20 cm) long and reaches a diameter of up to four inches (10 cm).

3. FERAL HOGS
Wild hogs are a problem throughout all of Florida’s 67 counties and may have first arrived in the state as early as 1539, courtesy of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto for hunting and food. They can grow between five and six feet long and can weigh upwards of 150 pounds.

2. LIONFISH
Lionfish are beautiful to look at, but they don’t belong in Florida’s waters. These highly-venomous fish are native to Indonesia and are equipped with very poisonous spines. They are impressively adaptable and can survive in a variety of marine environments. Lionfish prey on nearly everything and can consume up to 30 times their stomach volume.

1. RHESUS MACAQUE
For the past 80 years, Florida’s Silver Spring State Park has been home to a population of rhesus macaques, a monkey that is native to south and southeast Asia. National Geographic reports that their population is estimated to double in size and carry a deadly herpes virus.
